How to Wager
Wagering 101
Win: You select the horse you think will finish first in the race, and if it does, you collect!
Place: If your selected horse finishes first or second, you collect.
Show: Means selecting a horse you think will finish third or better. If it does, you cash a winning ticket.
Exacta: Here, you select the top two finishers in a given race, but they must finish in the order you have selected.
Triple: Here you select the top three finishers in a race. You win when your three horses are the first three to cross under the finish wire. If you place a "straight" triple wager, they must finish in the exact order you selected them; if you place a "box" wager (explained below), they may finish in any order.
Superfecta: Here you select the top four finishers in a race. You win when your four horses are the first four to cross under the finish wire. If you place a "straight" triple wager, they must finish in the exact order you selected them; if you place a "box" wager (explained below), they may finish in any order.
Daily Double: Just about every racetrack has a Daily Double with the first two races, as does ours. You select a horse you think will win the first race with a horse you think will win the second race. (i.e., say "$2 Daily Double, 5-7". In order to win, the #5 horse must win the first race and the #7 horse must win the second race.) Currently, we also have a 'double' in the 7th and 8th races. Check the top of the program in each race for the different types of wagering available for that particular race.
Pick Three: This is similar to a Daily Double except you pick the winners in three consecutive races instead of two. Again, check the top of the program or the infield tote board to see the types of wagers available in each race.
Pick Four: Pick the winners in four consecutive races (usually the last four races) and you win the bet. These types of wagers can pay large dividends if you're lucky enough to cash the winning ticket.
Ways to Increase Your Winning Chances
Wheel Wagers: This is actually a method of combining one horse with several others in the same wager. A Wheel keys one horse to any or all of the wagers. A "Wheel" using the number five, for example, would give you the following wagers: 5-1, 5-2, 5-3, 5-4, 5-6 ... etc. (The actual number of bets is determined by the number of horses in the race.) In this example, (you would say "$2 exacta-Five with all") if the number 5 horse wins the race, you would hit the exacta, no matter who runs second.
Box Wagers: This wagering method combines several horses in one race in every possible way. An Exacta "Box" wager combining horses 1, 2 and 7 would, for example, give you the following wagers: 1-2, 2-1, 1-7, 7-1, 2-7 and 7-2. |
